I Have Been A KPop Fan For 10 Years And I Love This Film | My Thoughts On Kpop Demon Hunters
Sony Pictures Animation & Netflix
I watched Kpop Demon Hunters twice, and as someone who has been a Kpop fan for a decade, I loved everything about it, from the satisfying animation to the beautiful characters to the catchy music. This is a feel-good film that reignited my appreciation for animation and sparked a new hyperfixation. Here are my serious and unserious thoughts on Kpop Demon Hunters.
About Kpop Demon Hunters

When K-pop superstars Rumi, Mira and Zoey aren't selling out stadiums, they're using their secret powers to protect their fans from supernatural threats. Summary from Netflix.com
How I got into K-pop
10 Years ago, I watched the MV to The Boys by SNSD, and from then on, I was absolutely hooked on K-pop. The eye-catching aesthetics of each group, catchy music, and fun choreography grabbed my attention, and I have been a fan ever since. I have observed how the genre has gradually become mainstream in the US, and I have also witnessed the West's varying responses to K-pop, both positive and negative. My all-time favorite groups are TWICE and BTS, and I have seen (especially with BTS) how the West treats them. IYKYK.
When I first saw advertising for Kpop Demon Hunters, I thought it was going to be a soulless cash grab because everyone is trying to profit off of this music genre atm, so I initially wrote it off. However, a few months ago, I began to see my circle of K-pop fans discussing the movie in a positive light. Then I saw a clip from the fansign scene, and that’s when I realized this movie was crafted with love and care by and for K-pop fans, so I decided to watch the film.
Two months later, I watched it again, and now I am obsessed with it.
Huntr/x Is So Expressive
Sony Pictures Animation & Netflix
I know this may be a strange thing to say, but I was shocked by how expressive the animation was, as I don’t watch animation nearly as much as I watch live-action media. I do watch anime, and I am currently watching Twilight Out Of Focus and There’s No Freaking Way I’ll Be My Your Lover! Unless…, and I recently finished watching Arcane, one of my favorite pieces of media ever created. However, there is something different about this animation, and as I'm not an animator, I struggle to pinpoint the exact words I am looking for. Nevertheless, it is very satisfying to look at.
The girls are also gorgeous and possess unique traits and characteristics that complement their character design. I personally am hopelessly in love with Mira. I like to describe her as the blunt problem child who found her family with HUNTR/X, but still tries to maintain a hard exterior so that no one can see all the trauma she is hiding.
Oh my God, Sony, please give me a prequel novel or something, I am begging.
K-pop Fan Culture
Sony Pictures Animation & Netflix
Any mention of K-pop fan culture had me pausing the film to freak out, I’m so serious. I loved how they mentioned the different positions of the girls in the group (rapper, visual, main vocalist, etc.) and showed fans with photocards, fansigns, and lightsticks, because if you are a hardcore fan for a group, you KNOW how expensive it can get.
For example, TWICE is my ult group. I have seen them in concert three times; I have a lightstick, I own many of their albums, and I have a lot of fan-made merchandise. I don’t play when it comes to TWICE, so when they showed the fans freaking out about HUNTR/X while at the concert, it reminded me of all the times I have seen TWICE in concert.
TWICELIGHTS - Purdentail Center July 2019
III - UBS Arena January 2022
READY TO BE - Metlife Stadium July 2023
It’s also ironic since TWICE did record a version of ‘Takedown’ for the movie and ‘Strategy’ is on the official soundtrack
Also, the game shows and street busking were so accurate, but what really caught my attention was the intro to the International Idol Awards. It is literally the MAMAs. The intro was so overdramatized, and that is EXACTLY how the MAMA Awards are.
Ugh, remember when the MAMAs were fun?
The music Is So SO Good
Sony Pictures Animation & Netflix
Ya’ll, when ‘How It’s Done’ started playing, I KNEW I was in for some good shit. All the songs are catchy and feature great lyrics. I literally can’t pick a favorite, but I can tell you that ‘Golden,’ ‘How It’s Done,’ ‘Takedown,’ and ‘What It Sounds Like’ have been on repeat for the past month.
Final Thoughts
Sony Pictures Animation & Netflix
We need more fun movies like this. I couldn’t stop smiling throughout the film; I was genuinely happy while watching it. I loved this film and hope Sony doesn’t run it into the ground, and they allow the creators to take their time developing new pieces of media for the franchise. But please, for the love of everything good in this world, release it physically and DO NOT make a live-action version.
And one more thing: Do they really only pay Bobby 3%?
