My 2025 Year In Film: A Letterboxd Recap
Welcome to my third annual Letterboxd Year In Film recap post!
2025 was a year full of grief, loss, happiness, and love for me, and, oddly enough, those themes were present in the movies I watched this year. Throughout 2025, I watched 43 films and a handful of TV shows. Here is my Letterboxd 2025 year-in-review, or, better known as me being a semi-serious film critic and speaking about my insane tastes in movies and fictional characters.

January
Warner Bros
I started the year by watching Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two (2011). I enjoyed it more than part 1, and I cried more than I should have during the film. I wrote about my thoughts on Harry Potter as a person who fell in love with the Wizarding World as an adult, and my thoughts on the TV reboot here: I Watched The Harry Potter Films For The First Time - Here Are My Thoughts On The TV Reboot Series.
I then sailed on Virgin Voyages Scarlet Lady cruise later in the month and watched Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019), Skyfall (2012), Borderlands (2024), Specter (2015), It Ends With Us (2024), and The Proposal (2009). Virgin Voyages is, in my opinion, the best cruise line for movie nights. Their selection of movies to watch in your cabin is massive, and it’s a film and travel lover’s dream. Get some popcorn from the Social Club and some pizza from the Pizza Place, and you have the perfect movie night at sea.
Feburary
Mubi
February is usually when I am in crunch time preparing for the Oscars, and I kicked off the month anticlimactically by watching Emilia Perez (2024). I watched The Substance (2024) and wished I had seen it months earlier. Then I watched Phantom Thread (2017) and was disappointed, as many had hyped it for years.
Midway through the month, I finally watched The Shape of Water (2017), and it was fantastic. One of the most touching films I have ever seen, and I cried, of course. I then rewatched Loving Annabelle (2006) and wondered why there were no locks on the school's doors.
After a huge award show win, I broke down and paid $5 to watch Anora (2024). All I'm gonna say is I don’t know why it won Best Picture. I then watched Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu (2024) and wished I had caught it in theaters; I was very disappointed by the lack of love it received during award season.
I also watched the first season of Severance, which was very disturbing to me as I was unemployed at the time.
March
Focus Features
In March, I rewatched The Substance (2024) with my mom the day of the Oscars because I was so sure it was going to win Best Picture, and Demi Moore was going to win Best Actress. I dropped to my knees when the winners of those categories were announced, but let’s be honest, it still wasn’t as bad as my reaction to the 2023 Oscars Best Picture and Best Actress.
Yeah, I am never going to get over that.
Brokeback Mountain (2005) was added to Peacock during March, and I finally watched it and SOBBED. It immediately went into my letterboxd top four.
I needed some fun films while dealing with a family emergency, so I watched The Lost City (2022) and Trap (2024). I then watched Black Bag (2025) in theaters and really enjoyed it, even though I am not a big fan of spy movies.
I ended the month by traveling to the Metrograph in NYC to watch a screening of my favorite film of all time, Tár (2022). It was my third time watching the movie, but my second in theaters, and it just gets better every time I watch it. After this screening, there was a Q&A with the editor Monika Willi, moderated by composer Alex Weston. I was so enlightened to find out so much about how she and others put this film together. I hope to attend more Q&A screenings like this in the future.
April
A24
April was a tough month for me as I was dealing with intense feelings of grief and loss from losing a loved one for the first time in my life, so I did not watch much. But what I did watch had heavy subject matter, and I believe that was me trying to cope with the intense feelings I was dealing with. I watched Devil In The Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke (2025), Bad Influence: The Dark Side of Kidfluencing (2025), and Hereditary (2018).
May
Lionsgate
I rewatched Borderlands (2024) and appreciated it for all of its flaws.
June
Netflix
I rewatched season one of Arcane and watched the second season and had some thoughts on how the show ended: This Show Is A Work Of Art Even If The Ending Is Disappointing | My Thoughts On Arcane Season Two
July
Netflix
In July, I watched Kpop Demon Hunters (2025) and became obsessed with it. As a K-Pop fan for over a decade, I think this movie is perfect, and I am still listening to the soundtrack as of January 2026. This month, I also watched John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum (2019), Superman (2025), and Jurassic World Rebirth (2025).
I enjoyed Superman wayyy more than I thought I would, and I only saw Jurassic World Rebirth because Scarlet Johansson is one of my favorite actors. And this was another instance of me not liking dinosaur movies, but I still saw it in theaters because one of my faves was in it. (The first instance being 65 (2023))
August
Marvel Studios
As an aviation geek, I watched Flight (2012) and it low-key scared me. Then I watched The Fantastic 4: First Steps (2025) and fell in love with Sue Storm.
September
Netflix
I rewatched Kpop Demon Hunters (2025) with my dad, and then while sailing on Carnival Celebration (Review and trip reports coming soon. Please subscribe to my email list to be notified when those posts go live.), I managed to find two movies worth watching: The Pacifier (2005) and Delivery Man (2013). Compared to Virgin Voyages, Carnival has an abysmal selection of free movies on demand.
October
Netflix
No films in October, as I watched Hunting Wives. In my honest opinion, this show was overhyped. The first couple of episodes were decent, then it went off the deep end, and the ending was super disappointing.
November
Netflix
In November, I saw the Kpop Demon Hunters (2025) sing along in theaters and thought my partner and I would be the only adults, with everyone else being teenagers. And to my surprise, the theater was mostly families with well-behaved children and parents who did not bother to practice basic theater etiquette.
I then went on Virgin Voyages Resilient Lady (Review and trip reports coming soon; please subscribe to my email list to be notified when those posts go live) and watched a lot of movies again, since their selection is just incredible. I watched Were The Millers (2013), Contagion (2011), Argylle (2024), Honey Don’t! (2025), Just Go With It (2011), and No Time To Die (2021).
Contagion was unverving to watch as we literally lived it, and Argylle was the strangest movie I have ever seen. It had good moments, and then it lost me, and I just ended up watching it for the editing.
Honey Don’t! isn’t as bad as y’all claim it to be. We will never have movies like Just Go with It again, and it makes me sick, and No Time to Die was an anticlimactic end to this Bond, in my opinion.
Also imma need Jennifer Aniston and Kathryn Hahn to be in a movie together again.
Decemeber
Universal
My partner is a huge FNAF fan, so I agreed to watch the first one and then the second in theaters during the opening weekend. I surprisingly liked the Fight Nights At Freddy’s (2023), it had a good story. But Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 (2025) lost me. The story was convoluted, and I wonder whether fans who understood the references, unlike me, felt the same way. I went to the bathroom for 5 minutes, and when I came back, it felt as though 30 things happened, and I was even more lost.
But other than that, the vibes in the theater for FNAF 2 were great. Being surrounded by a bunch of people who are passionate about the same thing, dressed up or cosplayed, was nice. It reminded me of how MCU movie opening weekends used to be.
Ah, simpler times…
